Star Trek: Voyager Episode 1, “Caretaker”
(In sickbay)
KIM: Computer, initiate Emergency Medical Holographic program.
(A balding human male appears.)
EMH: Please state the nature of the medical emergency.
KIM: Multiple percussive injuries.
EMH: Status of your doctor?
KIM: He's dead.
EMH: How soon are replacement medical personnel expected?
KIM: That could be a problem. We're pretty far away from replacements right now.
(The EMH injects one man with a hypo then hands it to Kim.)
EMH: Tricorder.
(Kim hands him a tricorder, The Doctor looks at it with disdain)
EMH: Medical tricorder.
Well, Doctor, we can finally grant you your wish!
Factory Entertainment has just announced their TNG, DS9 and VOY medical tricorder Mark VII replica. And it will have lots of flashy lights and some bells and whistles too.
Though purists will have to be aware that this is NOT an exact screen hero replica. This is an idealized replica based on screen shots and props from personal collections.
Some differences in appearance will be evident on this in order to make it function to it’s highest potential.
The Mark VII Medical Tricorder replica features a working LED screen with active animation based upon which scan mode you select, lighting and sound which activate when you open the tricorder’s lower flap, and a removeable medical hand scanner with its own lighting and sound components.
The tricorder body itself is cast in a metal alloy, while the hand scanner is made from machined aluminum — and is held inside the upper slot using integrated magnets when not being waved up and down in front of a patient.
The scanner is more accurate to the later-season version which does have the flashing green lights, as well as green lighting inside the scanner slot at the top of the tricorder body.
The digital display, which can showcase one of three separate animated scan readouts (with designs based upon original tricorder display art created for The Next Generation). The shape of the screen is a bit squarer than those screen-used tricorder props, which Factory Entertainment tells us is due to the lack of commercially-available LED displays for the sizing required to be a more rectangular shape.
The red “PWR” light is also modified from the hero prop: rather than a flush light behind the graphic, the replica has a slightly protruding “PWR” light which was deliberately designed in to quickly activate the ‘ratchet’ sounds which accompanies the opening flap.
The medical tricorder prop will be limited, and is up for pre-order now for $799.99 with a $50.00 deposit at FactoryEntertainment.com.
Thank you to our friends at TrekCore.com for breaking the story.
